One of the first ways to tell if poor circulation exists in the feet is by the numbness and tingling that is often experienced. More severe examples may be a cold feeling that develops in the feet in addition to possible cramping. Poor circulation may be a symptom of vascular disease which often occurs with blocked arteries. When this occurs, the blood is not carrying adequate amounts of oxygen to and away from the heart, and this is often noticed in the feet. The development of sores on the feet may be a sign that poor circulation exists, and may have difficulty in healing properly. You may also notice a slower growth pattern in your toenails If you feel you may have poor circulation in your feet, speaking with a podiatrist is recommended.

While poor circulation itself isn’t a condition; it is a symptom of another underlying health condition you may have. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can potentially lead to poor circulation in the lower extremities. PAD is a condition that causes the blood vessels and arteries to narrow. In a linked condition called atherosclerosis, the arteries stiffen up due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood vessels. These two conditions can cause a decrease in the amount of blood that flows to your extremities, therefore resulting in pain.

Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of poor circulation are:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Throbbing or stinging pain in limbs
  • Pain
  • Muscle Cramps

Treatment for poor circulation often depends on the underlying condition that causes it. Methods for treatment may include insulin for diabetes, special exercise programs, surgery for varicose veins, or compression socks for swollen legs.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

How to Cure Cracked Heels

Cracked heels may be caused by several different factors. One of the most common causes is prolonged standing. Standing makes skin on the feet harden, and this could potentially lead to cracks in the skin. The best way to solve this problem is by finding a cushion to place on the bottom of the feet. It is also important to take breaks if you find yourself standing up for a long period of time. Another cause of cracked heels is old age. As you grow older, the skin on the bottom of your feet will begin to thicken and develop cracks. This is because old skin eventually loses the elasticity and moisture it once had in the past. Certain medical conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, diabetes, and thyroid conditions, and psoriasis are also known to cause cracks in the feet.

If the skin on your feet starts to crack, you may want to see a podiatrist to find treatment. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists from Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

It is important to moisturize your cracked heels in order to prevent pain, bleeding, and infection. The reason cracked heels form is because the skin on the foot is too dry to support the immense pressure placed on them. When the foot expands, the dry skin on the foot begins to split.

Ways to Help Heal Them

  • Invest in a good foot cream
  • Try Using Petroleum Jelly
  • Ease up on Soaps
  • Drink Plenty of Water

Ways to Prevent Cracked Heels

  • Moisturize After Showering
  • Skip a Shower
  • Keep Shower Water Lukewarm
  • Don’t Scrub Your Feet

If you are unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels, seek guidance from a podiatrist. Your doctor will help you with any questions or information you may need.

Is Athlete's Foot Contagious?

If you experience itchy feet and toes, you may have what is referred to as athlete’s foot. This condition is caused by a fungus, and it thrives in moist environments, such as the inside of shoes and socks. Common places for this contagious condition to spread include public pools and showers, and it’s suggested to wear appropriate shoes while in these areas. Affected skin may appear to be dry, red, and cracked, which can lead to severe itching and may potentially cause discharge to ooze from affected areas. Proper treatment can consist of using an anti-fungal powder after thoroughly washing and drying the feet, especially between the toes. Consult with a podiatrist for additional information about athlete’s foot.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.

Prevention

The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:

  • Thoroughly washing and drying feet
  • Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
  • Using shower shoes in public showers
  • Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
  • Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot

Symptoms

Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Scaly and peeling skin

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.

There are many benefits in stretching the feet and toes, including improved posture and the ability to maintain balance in certain yoga poses and in everyday activities. Learning how to stretch the toes can aid in developing the feeling of being centered and can potentially help one attain overall personal power. Stretching can easily be achieved by using pedicure separators that are often worn in nail salons or by sitting on the floor and and stretching the toes on one foot with your opposite hand, then repeating on the other side. Pointing and flexing the toes, in addition to rotating the ankles, is beneficial in maintaining strength in the entire foot. This can help make performing everyday activities easier.  Please consult a podiatrist for additional information about the benefits of performing stretching exercises for the feet.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with one of our podiatrists from Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.
