Effects of Morton’s Toe

Anyone with a second toe longer than the big toe has a condition known as Morton’s toe. This abnormality is generally the result of a congenital condition or a genetic disposition. Girls are more likely to have a Morton’s toe than boys. Morton’s toe is a misnomer, as the problem in bone structure is not in the toe, but in the first metatarsal beneath the big toe. This condition brings with it a host of foot problems, the most important of which is overpronation. This, in turn, can cause further problems with the feet, such as pain in the ball of the foot, Morton’s neuroma, and stress fractures in the metatarsals. Morton’s toe may also be responsible for weak ankles, shin splints, or tight calf muscles. An orthotic device that offers arch support and a metatarsal pad can help to relieve the cascading effects of Morton’s toe as it keeps the foot aligned. A change in footwear to shoes with a wide and roomy toe box also can relieve some discomfort. A surgical remedy is considered to be a last resort. For help with problems associated with Morton’s toe, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

If left untreated, an ingrown toenail can lead to more serious concerns, such as an infection. Knowing proper nail care can help in the prevention of an ingrown toenail. Give us a call, and get treated!

The majority of diabetic patients understand the importance of maintaining good foot care. Neuropathy is a common condition that can develop in people who have diabetes, and it is defined as the inability to feel existing cuts or wounds that have developed on the feet. Having elevated amounts of glucose levels in the blood may lead to poor circulation and nerve damage, possibly causing severe pain and foot ulcers to develop. Proper foot care begins daily with washing and drying the feet, followed by inspecting the soles with a mirror. This is an effective way to notice if any cuts have developed, and a family member or caregiver may help to accomplish this. It is beneficial to have toenails trimmed weekly, which may be helpful in preventing an ingrown toenail from developing. The feet need as much protection as possible, and this can be done by wearing comfortable shoes, in addition to refraining from walking barefoot. If you have diabetes, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition and offer additional prevention techniques for maximum foot protection.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

Why Does My Big Toe Hurt?

There are various reasons why pain in the big toe can happen. The foot condition that is known as gout causes sharp pain in the joints of the big toe. Many people notice the pain can begin at night, and happens as a result of excess uric acid that collects in the toe joints. Having an ingrown toenail can cause intense toe pain. This condition occurs when the nail grows into the skin of the side of the toe instead of over it, and can be accompanied by swelling, redness, and tenderness. The ligaments in the toe are affected when turf toe happens, and can be a common injury among athletes. A bony lump that forms on the side of the big toe may indicate a bunion has developed. The gradual movement of this toe may cause the other toes to shift toward each other, and larger shoes may need to be purchased. If you have toe pain, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can determine the cause and offer effective treatment solutions.

Blunt Force Can Cause a Broken Toe

Blunt trauma is generally the cause of a broken toe. This can happen if a heavy object drops on it, or if it is stubbed into a piece of furniture. If the toe is mildly broken, it may be classified as a stress or hairline fracture, and the buddy taping method is generally successful in treating this foot condition. This is done by taping the broken toe to the toe next to it, which can provide the necessary stability as the healing process occurs. If the toe is severely fractured, it may have a bone protruding from it, or it may have shattered from direct force. A diagnosis is performed that can confirm and determine the severity of the broken toe. This is done by having an X-ray taken and is followed by beginning the correct treatment method. The symptoms that are often accompanied by this ailment can include swelling, immediate bruising, and severe pain. If you have fractured your toe, it is strongly suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can provide treatment.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
  • Tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.
