Symptoms and Causes of Metatarsalgia

Pain in the ball of the foot is termed metatarsalgia because it is felt in the area of the metatarsal bones. Metatarsalgia can affect one or all of the five metatarsal bones that connect the toes to the other bones of the foot. Symptoms include a burning or an aching sensation, a sharp shooting pain, and tingling or numbness. Some patients report a feeling of having a tiny pebble inside their shoe under the ball of the foot. One of the most common causes of metatarsalgia is footwear that fits improperly. High heels with pointy toes are frequently a cause of metatarsal pain because these shoes force the ball of the foot into a small space.  Another cause of metatarsalgia is high-impact sports, especially running, that put extra pressure on the ball of the foot. Other reasons for metatarsalgia include being overweight, arthritis, certain foot deformities, and aging. If you have pain in the ball of the foot that continues to worsen, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for guidance.

Is My Toe Broken?

A broken toe is a common foot injury. It can happen because of a heavy object falling on it, or if it is stubbed on a piece of furniture. Broken toes are often accompanied by immediate bruising, and it may be difficult to walk. A broken toe is considered severe if the bone is protruding through the skin, and prompt medical attention should be sought. A diagnosis may consist of having an X-ray taken. Some broken toes can be treated by using the buddy taping method. This is when the broken toe is taped to the toe next to it for stability. The recovery time for a broken toe to heal can take up to six weeks. If you have fractured any of your toes, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Many Facets to Work Shoes

Many people have foot pain when their work day is over, and it is important to wear shoes that fit correctly that can help to reduce the aches and pains of standing all day. In addition to this, it is urged to practice foot safety, and this begins with purchasing protective shoes. Accidents may be reduced when shoes have a slip-resistant outer sole that offers adequate grip if the shoes get wet with water, oil, or grease. It is beneficial the shoes have a multilayer insole that can help to reduce strain in different areas of the foot. Swollen feet may be kept at a minimum when the shoes that are worn have a large toe area, in addition to having a deep heel cup that can help the feet to align with the ankles. It is best that the shoes are made from durable materials, and this may help ensure minimum wear and tear. The end of the work day when the feet are at their largest is the best time to buy work shoes, and it is helpful to try the intended shoes on with the socks that will be worn. If you have questions about what type of shoes to buy for your work day, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Is Having Flat Feet Always a Problem?

When an individual has flat feet, it means they have low or no arches in their feet. With this condition, their feet lie flat on the ground. The arches in the foot provide a spring to the step and help in distributing body weight. Arches need to be sturdy and flexible to accommodate movement on various surfaces. If a person has flat feet, their feet may roll inward when standing or walking which is known as overpronation. Having flat feet or pes planus, can cause no problems whatsoever, or it can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness. It can also affect the legs and impair posture. Children are flat-footed until their teen years. Adults can develop flat feet from genetics or underlying conditions, such as arthritis. Treatment for flat feet can be as simple as wearing supportive and cushioned shoes, obtaining orthotics, and performing exercises to minimize soreness. If you are an adult with flat feet and you experience pain or discomfort, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for evaluation and treatment options that can provide relief.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Moriches and Shirley, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Orthotics Versus Prosthetics

Some patients may not be fully familiar with the similarities and differences between orthotics and prosthetics. While both can be used to treat conditions of the feet, they are significantly different. Importantly, prosthetic devices in this context are mostly artificial legs. These devices can be used if an individual has lost a leg, perhaps by amputation. Orthotics, on the other hand, are either custom-made or over-the-counter shoe inserts that are designed to treat specific conditions of the feet. Therefore, both orthotics and prosthetics are significantly different medical devices. However, they are also similar in some respects. Namely, both orthotics and prosthetics can help individuals with serious health conditions to live lives that are better and less restrictive. It is suggested that you contact a podiatrist for more information about these devices.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact one of our podiatrists from Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

If you have any questions please contact our offices located in Moriches and Shirley, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

A Lump in the Arch of the Foot

A lump in the arch of the foot may indicate a plantar fibroma has developed. It is defined as a nodule that forms in the arch, and is found inside the plantar fascia, which is the portion of tissue that connects the heel to the toes. This is a benign condition, but it may cause pain and discomfort. Studies have shown it can be caused by genetic reasons or by a foot injury. Additionally, certain medical conditions can make some patients prone to developing a plantar fibroma. These can include diabetes, epilepsy, or liver disease. Many people have found relief by massaging the affected foot and keeping weight off of it as best as possible. If you have a lump on your foot, please consult with a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose and treat a plantar fibroma.

A plantar fibroma may disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Plantar Fibroma

A plantar fibroma is a fibrous knot in the arch of the foot. It is embedded in the plantar fascia which is a band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes along the bottom of the foot. There can be multiple plantar fibromas in the feet at the same time. There are no known causes for this condition. If you have a plantar fibroma, there will be a bump in the arch of your foot that cannot be missed. Any associated pain is most often due to a shoe rubbing against the nodule. Non-surgical options, such as steroid injections, physical therapy, and orthotics should be tried first. Surgery is a last resort and is the only thing that will remove a plantar fibroma entirely. Consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and to determine the treatment regimen that is right for you.

What Causes a Plantar Fibroma?

While there are no specific causes identified, a plantar fibroma can possibly come from genetic predisposition or the formation of scar tissue that forms from healing the tears in the plantar fascia.

What Are the Symptoms of a Plantar Fibroma?

There will be a noticeable lump in the arch of the foot that may or may not cause pain. If pain is felt, it is typically because a shoe is rubbing up against the lump or when walking or standing barefoot.

Treatment and Prevention

A plantar fibroma will not disappear without treatment, but it can get smaller and be a non-issue. If pain persists, a podiatrist examines the foot and when the arch of the foot is pressed, pain can be felt down to the toes. An MRI or biopsy might be performed to help diagnose or evaluate the plantar fibroma. The following non-surgical options are generally enough to reduce the size and pain of these nodules:

  • Steroid injections
  • Orthotics
  • Physical therapy to help apply anti-inflammatory creams on the bump

Surgery is considered if the mass increases in size and the patient continues to feel pain after non-surgical methods are tried.

Why Pregnant Women May Have Foot Pain

Many pregnant women have foot pain, and despite it being a temporary condition, it is nonetheless difficult to deal with. It may become prevalent in the third trimester and can be a result of the extra weight that has been gained. It is common for the feet to become swollen during pregnancy, which can happen from the additional fluids the body produces to accommodate the growing fetus. Water retention may affect the feet and ankles, and the blood pressure can increase. The body naturally produces the hormone that is known as relaxin, which is meant to loosen the tendons, ligaments, and muscles. This can impact the feet, and they may become wider, often requiring larger shoes to be purchased. If you would like more information about how pregnancy affects the feet, in addition to learning about successful relief methods, please consult with a podiatrist.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with one of our podiatrists from Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Moriches and Shirley, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

An Effective Toenail Fungus Treatment

One of the treatments that are available for toenail fungus is laser therapy. Research has shown this form of treatment has a high cure rate and is generally safe. Some patients may need to have consistent treatments for maximum effectiveness. This form of treatment works by using blasts of energy that produce heat. It is directed into the affected nail and the heat will target the fungus. This is an effective method in limiting the growth of the fungus and will ultimately destroy it. Patients who are considering laser treatment will meet with a podiatrist who will clip a part of the toenail to be properly examined. This is followed by cleaning existing dead skin surrounding the nails and trimming them. Once the foot is cleaned with a sterile solution, the laser will be directed over the affected nails. Complete healing can take up to 12 months as the new toenail grows free of fungus. If you are interested in having laser treatment to cure your toenail fungus, please consult with a podiatrist who can determine if this is the best course of treatment for you.

Laser treatment can be an effective way to get rid of toenail fungus. If you have any questions about laser treatment, consult with one of our podiatrists from Family Foot and Ankle Care of Moriches. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment for fungal nails.

What Are Toenail Fungal Infections?

Onychomycosis, or fungal infection of the nail, is a relatively common and non-serious condition. Around 10 percent of U.S. citizens are afflicted with fungal nails. Common forms of fungus that infect the nail include dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungal Infections Include:

  • Nail thickening
  • Brittleness of the nail
  • Discoloration of the nail

Diagnosis for Fungal Nails

Fungal infections are diagnosed by fungal culture and microscopy. This will rule out any other conditions such as nail trauma, psoriasis, lichen planus, and onychogryphosis.

What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment is a non-invasive, safe, quick, and painless procedure that uses the heat from a laser to kill fungus in the nail. Each infected nail is targeted with a laser for several minutes. The treatment is usually utilized several different times over a select period. During this time, a podiatrist will keep an eye on the infection.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Moriches and Shirley, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.
